TRAINING THE SINGING VOICE
often brings to light the principles and purposes underlying them, with
ultimate gains to the researcher. With this end in view, the following synoptic summaries are presented for interpretation by the vocal teach­ing profession. Table One presents a tabulation of all the concepts re­viewed in this chapter.
THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Terminology. As they are employed in this treatise, voice placement, voice culture, and training the singing voice are synonymous expressions, aH denoting that area of vocal pedagogy that relates to singing. An im­plicit distinction is made between the singing voice, a strictly musical connotation founded on Webster's definition, and the speaking voice, a purely non-musical connotation. These distinctions are more fully dis­cussed in Chapters IX (Diction) and X (Interpretation). Therefore, in this and succeeding chapters, the terminology of vocal teaching refers spe­cifically to the training of the singing voice and the term voice, appearing alone, in every case relates to the voice of the singer. Vocal pedagogy, as used in a general sense, also pertains to the science of teaching singing. Its specific applications include the formulation of principles and proce­dures (theories and methods) for training the singing voice in its many technical aspects.
Training the singing voice. For research purposes, a multiple approach to the training of the singing voice is used. The components of the act of singing are separately considered undo: the main headings of breathing, phonation, resonance, range, dynamics, ear training, diction, interpreta­tion; and under numerous subheadings within each chapter. These cate­gorical divisions are arbitrarily set up and are not to be construed as rec­ommended separate departments of vocal teaching. In this study, the student's finished singing performance is largely thought of as an integra­tion of development, combining the complex execution of many simple techniques, skillfully coordinated into an essential unity whose total structure is more readily understood because of the differential treatment administered to each of its interrelated parts.
Benefits of vocal study. The benefits of vocal training are classified as:
1.  physical: singing is health-giving, promotes deep breathing and
builds good posture.
2.  psychological: singing is a mental salubrient; it strengthens mem­ory and power of concentration, requires quick thinking, provides a constructive emotional oudet and means of self expression and removes
inhibitions.
